FORT DUCHESNE—A 7 vehicle car crash turned fatal near the Ute Tribal Plaza Supermarket at around 1 pm on Tuesday, August 27.
According to the Utah Highway Patrol, one elderly woman was confirmed dead at the scene and several others sustained injuries and have been transported to the hospital.
Six vehicles were stopped on Highway 40 in the eastbound travel lane when a truck, traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed, collided into the line of 6 stationary vehicles. According to UHP, the driver of the rear vehicle is the female who received fatal injuries. Her name has not yet been released.
Residents traveling through the area are being instructed to take alternate routes through Lapoint or Randlett, UT. UHP anticipates that Highway 40 will be closed for several hours while the investigation is ongoing.
Highway 40 has since reopened.
The female driver who died has been identified by the FBI as 65-year old Sylvia Carrell of Lapoint, Utah. Three others were taken to the hospital with non life threatening injuries.
A spokesperson for the FBI said, “The FBI, along with the BIA, Utah Highway Patrol and Uintah County Sheriff’s Office, continues to investigate the crash.”
