Early on March 18, the Governor of Utah, Gary Herbert, carried out an order that has closed all restaurant lobbies in the state. These restaurants will be closed until April 1, 2020, unless the duration is extended, which Governor Herbert will give a second announcement.

“Due to the circumstances and continuing spread of COVID-19,” said Governor Herbert, warning in his announcement, “the department shall immediately close any business activity at any establishment that violates this Order.”

Many restaurants saw this coming and were prepared for the worst. Some say this order may damage sales critically, causing local and corporate businesses alike to suffer greatly.

“It is incredibly straining on us,” said the staff of Vernal’s Denny’s, “after today, we can’t give all our workers hours and some of them are living solely off of the pay of this job. It’s only for two weeks, but two weeks matters.”

“We had our employee’s prepared for this kind of event,” said Jared Rockwood, a manager of Rocky’s place in Roosevelt, “it’s going to hit us hard regardless, but at least we can say that we were prepared for it.”

Restaurants will still be able to continue serving foods through call-in orders, drive-throughs, or curbside delivery, allowing sales to continue flowing while still serving food to the people; however, lobbies of any size will continue to be closed and cash payments are strongly discouraged.
