Uintah Middle School caught ablaze Tuesday afternoon, causing the entire school’s teaching schedule to be halted so that everyone was able to be evacuated safely. The Vernal City/Uintah County Fire Department was dispatched at approximately 2:12pm with report of smoke in the building. The fire’s place of origin was a bathroom in the 7th-grade wing of the school. The Vernal Police department has released a statement revealing the cause of the fire involved a student.
“The investigation into the fire and evacuation of the Uintah Middle School has resulted in the detention of a juvenile offender,” said the Vernal Police Department, “the investigation, including video evidence, supports the fact that the juvenile offender acted alone, and the offender is currently detained.”
The good news of this situation is how quickly and effectively the children were evacuated as no children were harmed within the crisis. The school itself had only sustained minor damages and classes will be held at their regular schedule for the foreseeable future.
“The teaching staff was really on top of things in terms of safety,” said Jessica Blunt, an 8th-grade math teacher at the school, “today’s fire showed us that we really are prepared for any possible fire.”
